What is art therapy?

Art therapy uses art materials, creative processes, and applied psychological theories within a therapeutic relationship.

Guided by a professional art therapist, it can foster resilience, self-esteem and awareness, promote insight, improve social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and encourage growth and change.

There is no need for prior knowledge, skill or artistic talent to benefit from art therapy! The goal is to improve and preserve the quality of life and mental health through the therapeutic relationship and the use of various artistic techniques such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and more in a way that corresponds to the personal need, desire and ability of each and every cliant.

When to seek therapy?

Referrals to therapy are motivated by a variety of factors. Adults can seek therapy in case of significant emotional distress that causes suffering, interpersonal difficulties, a desire for change in lifestyle along with a feeling of exhaustion or dissatisfaction, and more. It is more common for children and youth not to seek treatment on their own. A child's parents or educational system will usually recognize difficulties or distress in the child and seek assistance, whether through individual therapy, therapeutic groups, or parental guidance, in order to facilitate and help the child to cope. Why art therapy?

Because art therapy is playful and offers nonverbal expression, it can be used with many populations, from young children to elderly people in one-on-one sessions, groups, families, couples and dyadic sessions (parent-child). There has been evidence that art therapy is effective for people with a variety of difficulties, including mental health, trauma, interpersonal problems, low self-esteem, emotional regulation problems and more. Different art therapists specialize in working with different populations, so it is recommended to ask the therapist you are contacting what their field of specialization is and whether it would be a good fit for you.
